We all want the best available products on the market, but when there are so many options available it’s hard to decide what to buy. Most products are cotton based, which isn’t a bad thing, but there are nicer fabrics available that both you and your baby will love.
If you’ve ever touched a bamboo fabric baby blanket or clothing, you will know why so many parents love it so much. The lightweight, silky soft fabric is so cozy and cuddly, it’s often described as feeling like cashmere. Here’s why it’s so touchable: the fiber of the bamboo is naturally round and smooth edged without having any chemical treatment to make it that way. With no sharp or rough edges to irritate, the bamboo fabric can be worn directly on your baby’s sensitive skin- even the most sensitive of skin that is highly allergic to other natural fibers, like wool or hemp. Alongside the above, the fabric also has long fibers that make the quality of it sustainable to multiple washings. Some parents even argue that the fabric gets softer with every wash!
As well as being safe for babies, your fabrics need to be sustainable for infant usage. Bamboo has another extremely unique and useful quality, which is the textile’s antibacterial capability. As opposed to cotton, the bamboo fiber naturally has an antimicrobial bio-agent called bamboo kun that protects from nasty bacteria and unpleasant odors without the use harmful chemicals. On top of that, the bamboo plant is highly water absorbent. In fact, it’s able to soak up to three times its weight in liquid. The bamboo fiber products resemble this great quality by soaking the moisture away so that it can evaporate.
Unlike the majority of other available resources, the bamboo fabric is extremely eco-friendly with the way it’s made as well as it’s sustainability. Bamboo grows super fast with less energy and low maintenance, and requires next to no pesticides, so it is a great renewable resource to use. Bamboo plants also provide clean air to breath and consume carbon dioxide, and because bamboo forests are much more dense, they return 30% more oxygen to the atmosphere than trees do. Unlike synthetic fibers that often use petroleum additives, Bamboo fabric products are 100% biodegradable and therefore safe for municipal disposable programs, including both landfill and incineration.
When choosing an organic fabric for my little ones, I usually try to go for 100% Bamboo products. Organic Cotton is also great, but growing cotton without nasty pesticides and fertilizers is extremely labor-intensive which makes it slightly pricier without ticking all of the boxes that bamboo does. For a soft, sustainable, anti-allergenic and eco-friendly option, Bamboo fiber products are your answer.
