For mums who are switching to reusable wipes or simply incorporating them into your baby’s routine along with disposables, we applaud you! Reusable wipes have an endless list of benefits including being more sustainable for the Earth, kinder on your purse, and most importantly, kinder on your little one’s sensitive skin.
What’s fantastic about Reusable Cloth Wipes is that they can be just as efficient as disposables- a dunk in lukewarm water and they’re ready to go! But you can also add a drop of essential oils diluted with base/vegetable oils to help prevent or ease rashes and sores, and to add calming and moisturizing properties into washing your baby’s skin. They’re free from nasty chemicals and naturally good for the skin, so you can use them on your cloth wipes at bath times, feeding times or even bum changes to give your lovely baby happy skin. We’ve made a round up of the top essential oils to be used on your baby based on their natural properties for the skin so you can pick some up on your next shopping trip.
Roman Chamomile is a fantastic naturally calming antiseptic, and can help to heal sores on the skin as well as fading scars or spots. Diluted with a little water on your washcloths, chamomile is gentle enough on skin to be used from birth. German Chamomile is less gentle and is quite a powerful anti-inflammatory die to the presence of a compound called Azulene, so is safer used 3 months onwards.
Not only is lavender a great smelling and very calming oil, it is also widely used in many different skincare products. Lavender has antiseptic and antifungal properties that are proven to speed up the healing process and prevent scarring. Many people also use it to sooth eczema, as it relives itchiness and decongests the irritated skin by adding moisture- speeding up the healing process. Using it near bedtime may also help your little one nod off quicker, too!
Tea Tree Oil/Melaleuca
Tea Tree Oil has been proven to have natural antiviral, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties that soothe the skin better than most prescription creams. The use of Tea Tree Oil results in less itching, irritation and scaling. Although it can dry the skin out, try mixing it with almond or coconut oil to moisturise the skin, as its natural, gentle healing powers are great for fragile skin.
We LOVE coconut oil. It’s organic, gentle, moisturizing and nourishing on the skin, which makes it great to use on babies. The smell is delicious, and it naturally has antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial benefits. We love that it adapts well mixed with chemical-free castile soap for bubbly bath times, yet is thick enough to be doubled up as a moisturizing nappy cream or body lotion. It’s even perfect for washing and moisturizing cradle cap and can help to heal the skin quicker. Make sure you buy extra virgin coconut oil for the purest, most natural form- it’s nice and affordable, too!
Lightly and sweetly scented, almond oil acts as a great partner for reusable washcloths. The oil is packed full of vitamins and is naturally rich in emollients, and they have been using it as a traditional skin treatment in India for centuries! Almond Oil will loosen cradle cap and other forms of scaly areas, and deeply nourish your baby’s gentle skin.
Frankincense promotes a natural and healthy anti-inflammatory response, and is also naturally gentle and kind to skin. It’s sensitive healing properties are great for bathing little ones who are learning to roll, crawl or walk as their skin begins to rub on flooring and carpets, but also works wonders on those irritating face rashes during teething times.
BARE IN MIND that essential oils should always be diluted with a base oil or vegetable oil, such as olive oil, as they can be strong on the skin and cause irritation. Then mix them with a little lukewarm water on a damp washcloth for an extra gentle clean on your baby’s delicate skin.
We may be biased, but we LOVE our Reusable Wash Cloth Baby Wipes. They’re made from 100% organic bamboo, which is naturally super soft, anti-fungal and antibacterial. They come in playful pops of colour to brighten up messy meal times, yucky bum changes and soapy bath times. Check them out on Amazon!
